Understanding the Brain by Peter Mobbs

Scientists, and especially neuroscientists like Professor Mobbs, have very different ways of understanding the brain. But like the creators of Hal and R2D2, scientists must also use great imagination and persistence to explore and re-explore the unknown as they seek new discoveries and connections about what it means to be human. Mobbs has created this most interesting chart below as a way of helping others fathom — or begin to fathom — the many dimensions of what can be explored in this incredible human organ. When you finish with the chart, consider the quotes Professor Mobbs has put below the chart.

That, too, is inside the brain.

UNDERSTANDING THE BRAIN — PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

´

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. — The Dalai Lama

When intelligent machines are constructed, we should not be surprised to find them as confused and as stubborn as are men in their convictions about mind, matter, consciousness, free will, and the like” — Marvin Minsky:  Communication With Alien Intelligence

“Will robots inherit the earth? Yes, but they will be our children. We owe our minds to the deaths and lives of all the creatures that were ever engaged in the struggle called Evolution. Our job is to see that all this work shall not end up in meaningless waste”. — Marvin Minsky: Will Robots Inherit the Earth?

Professor Peter Mobbs, researcher and neuroscientist, is Emeritus Professor of Physiology for the Faculty of Life Sciences — and former Dean — at University College London. As a Buddhist and Subud member, he has a very distinct awareness of where meditation is active in the brain and where the latihan is active in the brain. Different places. Both good. — LT
